The Google Nexus One car dock in “hindsight” !

They say “Hindsight is 20/20” and although that may not always be true, time does give us the benefit of experience. If I would have written this review after using the Google Nexus One dock for a short time it would have been very different. After using the dock for 4+ months I’ve done a 180 degree turn on many of my initial impressions. Let me give you my “Monday morning quarterback” observations.

Google Maps 4.4 for Android available now!

With 6 updates in the past six months Google has once again  been busy adding new features for Google Maps 4.4 for Android OS 1.6 or newer. You can download the app by searching for “Google Maps” in the Android Market. The most recent update has added a dedicated places icon that opens a dedicated menu page of your favorite searches.

Faster=Better, Google Voice=Better, Make outgoing calls faster with “direct access numbers”!

Google launched an enhancement to the Android and Blackberry Google Voice App yesterday that speeds up the call connections using “Direct Access Numbers”. Prior to this update the Google Voice app had to make a request to the Google Voice server everytime a call was placed to send the number you wanted to dial.

iPad Wi-Fi connectivity issues addressed by Apple 3.2.1 iOS update.

In addition to iOS 4.0.1 for iPhone, iOS 3.2.1 update  has been released for iPad Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + 3G. The update addresses the iPad Wi-Fi connectivity issues experienced by many iPad owners, myself included.

There has been a selection of good virtual keyboard replacements available on the Google Android Market, Thickbuttons, Swype and Shapewriter come to mind. Consumer Reports announces it cannot recommend the iPhone 4!

Consumer Reports announced that it cannot recommend the iPhone 4 until Apple fixes the design flaw in the  antenna system. CR goes on to say “Our findings call into question the recent claim by Apple that the iPhone 4’s signal-strength issues were largely an illusion caused by faulty software that mistakenly displays 2 or more bars than it should for a given signal strength.” The tests also indicate that AT&T’s network might not be the primary cause of the iPhone 4’s reported signal  problems.  You can see Consumer Reports Video here.

Gulf Oil Spill in perspective!

(July 12, 2010) Today BP provided an update on developments with regard to the Deepwater Horizon oil well incident. This past weekend BP began replacing the existing containment cap over the the failed blow-out preventer with a new sealing cap assembly.  **Video after the break**

Chrome to Phone!

Wanted to share a find that has found a space on my phone and has proven to be very useful. It will enable you to send links from your Chrome or Firefox browser to your Froyo equipped Android device.

The Links can include browser links, Google Maps links, and you can copy and paste text or phone numbers from the Web to your Android Froyo equipped phone. I got everything to work but not exactly as described.

Media business changes create opportunities!

The widely held premise on the impending demise of the newspaper industry reminds me of the Mark Twain quote: “The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated.” I recently attended a newspaper teleconference hosted by Larry Maynard, a 40-year newspaper and advertising executive, that brought this canard into sharp focus.
