Google Maps updated to 4.5.1, Maps Live Wallpaper now includes weather!

Did you notice Google latest update for Google Maps for Android? It’s been recently updated to 4.5.1. The obvious change is the inclusion of weather for the maps live wallpaper. Google may have also tweaked the existing Walking Navigation Beta and the search filter (results by distance or ratings), as they are listed as “NEW” in this update.

TwiDroyd 4 is a transformative mobile Twitter experience!

Twitter recently stopped supporting “basic authentication,” which requires that you provide a Twitter username and password to the Twitter API every time you log in. Instead, Twitter will use Oauth, an authentication protocol that allows users to approve applications to act on their behalf without sharing their password each time.

Primer: Managing file attachments.

In my work as an advertising photographer, file attachments are an integral part of my everyday workflow. For many experienced computer users working with file attachments, is almost instinctual.

2nd Beta of Angry Birds Lite released for Android!

Rovio has released their 2nd Beta of Angry Birds Lite for Android version 1.3.5 on the Android Market. The latest release addresses compatibility issues . Reportedly V1.3.5  is capable of running on additional handsets including the HTC EVO 4G. The app is still not showing up in the Android Market for some handsets. Luckily this time Rovio has addressed this situation by making the app available for download on GetJar.

I ran across some interesting information detailing undocumented codes for many Android phones. You input the codes using the dialer to access phone features and information normally unavailable. The codes were obtained by decoding various .apk files present in the phones firmware.

OpenFeint social gaming platform now available on Android!

The popular OpenFeint iOS social gaming platform is now available on Android. OpenFeint allows developers to add “social networking aspects” into their games, with minimal programming. You can add friends, see what they are playing, view leaderboards and participate in forums or live chat. (Launch titles list after the break)

Tweetdeck for Android!

The good folks at Tweetdeck have been busy ironing out bugs and adding features to their Android beta app. The latest version 0.9.8, adds three widgets, Tweetdeck Bar, Tweetdeck Column and Tweetdeck Post. The latest version also lets you add your search items as columns to further customize the experience. (Download links after the break)

Google added widgets for its Voice application that adds fast access to the full Android App as well as one-click connection to four of its most common functions.

Cheap alternatives to expensive cell phone stands!

Now that our smartphones can do much more than simply make calls, I’ve been looking for a sturdy desk stand from which I can watch/listen to podcasts, or watch the occasional movie without having to hold the phone.

After doing some checking, most stands were priced around $15, with some going as high as $40.

Pissed at Angry Birds?

I was pleased to hear that Rovio was releasing its mega-hit Angry birds for Android. Not because I’m a huge fan of the game but because I felt that it was another sign that Android had arrived as a mobile platform. As the Android Army continues to grow so does its influence.
