The Amazon Android Appstore, featuring the highly anticipated Angry Birds Rio by Rovio Mobile as an launch title, kicked off today.
Getting started with the new app store is easy. Go to http://www.amazon.com and click on “Appstore for Android” listed under “Shop All Departments” on the top left of the main Amazon page. You then enter your mobile number or e-mail and Amazon will send you a link to download the Amazon Appstore.
Open your device settings and click “Applications” and check “Unknown Sources.” Once you have that set, you can click the install link your phone to download the Amazon App Store .apk file. After the download is complete, click on the .apk to install. Unfortunately, if you’re an Android owner on AT&T, installing non-market apps is not supported.
That’s all there is to the installation — sign in with your Amazon.com account information.
My initial impression of the Amazon app store is mostly positive. It was relatively easy to set up and use. The main screen is well laid out and is sub-divided by category.
You can also do searches within categories. Once the search results are obtained, you can then further refine your search and sort the items by price, average customer review, new releases etc. Very nice.
Another feature of the new app store I intend to take full advantage of is the “paid app for free every day” offer. Every day, when you log on to Amazon app store, a new paid app will be featured as a free download. I will definitely be checking in daily.
My main gripe about the new app store is that it causes another type of division within your installed Android apps. A new device install may become quite a tedious process instead of a simple sign into your Google account and re-install your apps.
You will now have apps installed from the Android Marketplace, the Amazon Appstore, as well as non-market apps installed. When you go to update or re-install your applications you will have to go back to each source in order to do so.
