Apple dominates mobile app space with content while Android aims for numbers

by John Roberts

Technology-Market

To say the app market is exploding would be an understatement. By the time you finish reading this press release another 100,000 apps will have been downloaded and $150,000 spent. According to a new app storefront forecast published by Strategy Analytics, Apps, Apps Everywhere: The Billion Dollar Industry, the app economy is strong and getting stronger as paid downloads are expected to drive nearly $2 billion per quarter by the end of 2012.

Driving more paid downloads, higher ASPs, and more total apps than any other platform, Apple remains king of the app economy through 2012. The Android Market is poised to overtake the Apple App Store in quarterly volume by the end of 2012, and Android generally will do so even sooner with additional assistance from third party distribution outlets such as the Amazon App Store, GetJar, Nook and others.

Apple MacBook Air (13-inch, 2011) / Mac OS X Lion (10.7) review

by George Heymann

Google+: gplus.to/Technology-Headlines

The new Macbook Air is an example of Industrial design that is both practical and beautiful. I’ve been a fan of the design aesthetic since the “Air” line launched in 2008. As much as I liked the design, Apples Mac book Air line has always been underpowered and overpriced, more of a status symbol than a practical computer, until now.

The new Macbook Airs feature the latest Intel Sandy-Bridge processors that are both fast and energy efficient. All but the base model Air include 4 GB of Ram, at least 128 GB SSD (solid state flash storage), a thunderbolt (high speed I/O) port, a backlit keyboard and the new Max OS X Lion (10.7).

The Macbook Airs come in four basic configurations with upgrade options available for all models. The Macbook Airs start at $999 for the 11” to $1,699 for the top of the line 13” Model.

The latest version of the Mac desktop OS X Lion is installed on the new Airs, touting some 250 new features. Some of the key features include a Mac App Store, Multi-Touch gestures, Full-Screen Applications, Launchpad and Mission Control, a custom dashboard.

Virtual currencies proving popular with gamers

by A. Montaqim

Technology Market

The presence of virtual currencies within games is one of the main reasons behind the popularity and monetization success of in-app purchases, according to new research by Distimo. “Some 35% of the 300 most popular free games in June use some sort of virtual currencies to monetize in the Apple App Store for iPhone,” it said.

Distimo’s report covers the Apple App Store for iPad, Apple App Store for iPhone, Apple Mac App Store, BlackBerry App World, GetJar, Google Android Market, Nokia Ovi Store, Palm App Catalog, and Windows Phone 7 Marketplace in the United States in June 2011.

Time is nigh for smartphone security boost

by George Heymann

techeadlines@gmail.com

Mobile security software soon will be essential for smartphone users.
It’s unfortunate but the time is rapidly approaching where installing some type of mobile security software will be essential to the operation of a smartphone. Several recent security breaches — including attacks on Sony,
Citibank and Discover — have security and malware on the radar for many consumers.

Hacking risk increases as devices proliferate

On the mobile side, Google has had to remove dozens of malware applications that were introduced to the Android Market. iOS has been affected to a lesser degree but hasn’t been immune from malware.
Security experts Stonesoft and McAfee both are forecasting that sophisticated malware attacks to iOS will increase as mobile continues to grow and additional attention is focused on popular smartphones.
I’m troubled that many of the pitfalls that users must guard against on the desktop will also be hurdles to overcome in mobile. It’s puzzling to me why many of these very creative, talented individuals don’t apply their considerable skills to something beneficial to the user community and ultimately more profitable for themselves

Kaspersky says phishing attacks on Facebook and Habbo are intensifying

 by Anna Schmidt

Technology Market

Kaspersky Lab has presented its spam report for June 2011 and immediately captured headlines with its claim that phishing attacks on popular social networks Facebook and Habbo are intensifying.

“The amount of phishing emails remained unchanged and accounted for 0.02% of all mail traffic,” says Kaspersky in its report. “However, there was a considerable increase in the amount of phishing attacks on social networks Habbo and Facebook, increasing by 6.25 and 4.07 percentage points respectively, pushing the sites up to third and fourth places in the list of organizations attacked most. The experts at Kaspersky Lab also predict a surge in spam linked to Google+ after recent signs that spammers have begun exploiting the growing interest in the new social network.”

Mobile Wallet Adoption Strategies for the Newly-Partnered Isis

By Michael Koploy

ERP Analyst at Software Advice

Isis made big news last week when it announced it had established a partnership with the four largest credit card networks – Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express. This is great news for the mobile payments, and a indication that retailers may have more incentive to use Isis than the limited Google Wallet and PayPal NFC offerings.

The big test for Isis will be in the two pilot cities for 2012: Salt Lake City and Austin. Michael Koploy, ERP Analyst of Software Advice, recently express his thoughts on mobile payments adoption for Austin, Texas on the Software Advice blog. To effectively establish itself as the leader in mobile payments in the US, Koploy believes that Isis will have to follow these five adoption strategies in Austin:

  1. Spread the Word with Festivals and Conferences (e.g., South-by-Southwest, Austin City Limits)
  2. Find Innovative Ways to Integrate NFC with Education (e.g., University of Texas at Austin)
  3. Create NFC Purchasing Habits at Hip Food Venues (with Austin’s food trailers)
  4. Integrate NFC with High-End Supermarkets (e.g., Whole Foods)
  5. Attract the NFC Crowd with Merchant Neighborhoods (like Austin’s South Congress merchant hub)
