Steam: Digital cross-platform game distribution system done right!

by George Heymann

techeadlines@gmail.com

Steam is a digital distribution, digital rights management (DRM) system developed by Valve Corporation that is both multi-player and cross-platform.

One of the advantages of purchasing games digitally through the Steam Store are that purchases can be played on any computer that has the steam client installed. Software purchases are permanently tied to your Steam account not a specific computer.

I don’t know how many times, I’ve lost or damaged game disks or misplaced licensing documentation for games that I had previously purchased. With Steam those potential problems are no longer an issue. Just download and install the Steam Client, enter your account credentials and you have full access to your library of purchased games.

Opinion: What does Steve Jobs resignation mean?

by George Heymann

techeadlines@gmail.com

As we know from a short letter addressed to the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community yesterday, Steve Jobs resigned as CEO of Apple. As per Steve’s recommendation, the Apple board appointed COO Tim Cook as CEO.

Considering that Cook filled in for Jobs during previous medical leaves including the one this year, the move to appoint Cook as successor wasn’t unexpected. As requested, Apple also elected Jobs as Chairman of the Board and will remain with Apple in that capacity, effective immediately. Cook will also join the Board.

US could see $53 billion in 4G network investments by 2016, says Deloitte

by A. Montaqim

Technology Market

Consultancy firm Deloitte says that wireless telecommunications companies in the United States could invest $25 to $53 billion in fourth generation cellular wireless networks (4G) between 2012 and 2016, triggering $73 to $151 billion in gross domestic product growth and creating 371,000 to 771,000 jobs.

The firms also says additional growth could occur as high-tech companies create new mobile broadband products and services, further changing the way people live, work and learn.

The Deloitte report, The Impact of 4G Technology on Commercial Interactions, Economic Growth, and US Competitiveness, investigates the economic dynamics surrounding 4G technology and explains how the US can maintain the global leadership position in mobile broadband innovation it won during the 3G era.

Comcast set to offer $9.95 per month budget internet service for eligible low income families

by George Heymann

techeadlines@gmail.com

Comcast will be officially launching a budget $10 per month internet service for eligible low-income families in Colorado September 21.

The broadband experiment was designed by Comcast to tackle three primary barriers to broadband adoption as identified by its internal research. The lack of understanding of how the internet is relevant or useful, the cost of a home computer and the cost of internet service.

Comcast’s “Internet Essentials” program successfully addresses all three issues. The program offers residential Internet service for $9.95 per month (plus applicable taxes) with no installation or modem rental fees. It provides a voucher to optionally purchase a low-cost computer for $149.99 plus applicable taxes as well as access to digital literacy training programs.

Does Google want Motorola only for its patents, or is there something else?

by John Roberts

Technology Market

Google‘s decision to buy Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion is seen by many as the search giant’s attempt to get its hands on thousands of valuable patents. But is there another reason?

Motorola Mobility currently holds some 17,000 patents and has another 7,500 pending – all of which will be Google‘s to play with once the deal goes through.

However, Google‘s decision could also be a sign that Internet company is determined to establish itself in the smartphone market.

SF Planet Mini Display Port to DVI-I Female Adapter for Mac, inexpensive and works well

by George Heymann

techeadlines@gmail.com

I recently moved from a desktop to a laptop, as my primary personal computer. A big part of that decision was being able to find a laptop that was a good compromise between power and portability. Once I decided on the Mac platform, I needed a convenient way to be able to use the laptop with a full size monitor, keyboard and mouse for use in my home office.

In order to be able to use the 25” PC display I already had with my laptop I needed to purchase a Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter. Apple will sell you an adapter for $29.00, or you can order a third party adapter for less, considerably less.

Simple security for wireless

Researchers demonstrate the first wireless security scheme that can protect against “man-in-the-middle” attacks — but doesn’t require a password.

By Larry Hardesty

MIT News Office

In early August, at the Def Con conference — a major annual gathering of computer hackers — someone apparently hacked into many of the attendees’ cell phones, in what may have been the first successful breach of a 4G cellular network. If early reports are correct, the incident was a man-in-the-middle (MITM) attack, so called because the attacker interposes himself between two other wireless devices.
