Google updates OnTheFly to version 1.2, promises to simplify your trip planning.

ITA Software’s, OnTheFly airfare shopping mobile app by Google has just been updated to version 1.2 with versions available for Android, and iPhone.

OnTheFly makes it easy to compare fares across airlines, dates as well as alternate cities and airports. It’s actually faster and more convenient to check fares on my mobile than it is to do the same task on the web. Just input your origin and destination, click your preferred airports (the app recognizes airport code abbreviations) and the date range of when you prefer to travel. The choices narrow as you input your information almost if its reading your mind. A couple of clicks, and you can start packing!

OnTheFly Product Manager, Stefan Frank explains “One of the new features in v1.2 is flexible date search, which enables you to browse 35 days of potential departure dates on a calendar combined with an interactive “temperature” graph.

You can also save and access search history now, including particular itineraries of interest. We’ll even check price changes for those itineraries so you can know the best time to plan that dream trip.”

The application has an average 4.5/5 star rating, the most requested features which remain unavailable on the mobile app is the inclusion of budget fair carriers, the monthly web calendar of low fares between a city pair and the ability to book the fares directly from within the app.

If you haven’t already tried OnTheFly, you can download it for free from Android Market or the App Store. OnTheFly for use with BlackBerry (OS 4.6+) can be accessed at http://bbmatrix.itasoftware.com.

Quick Look: D30 band case, high impact protection for your smartphone

by George Heymann

techeadlines@gmail.com

D30 cases for sensitive electronics are being introduced by a number of manufacturers. D30 is an innovative material that in its normal state is soft and pliable, but when exposed to shock the molecules lock together to absorb and disperse energy before almost instantly returning to its flexible state.

The materials ability to function as an shock absorber make it ideal for applications like smartphone cases. After doing some research on D30, see our story ‘D30, science fiction meets reality!‘, I decided to pick up D30 Band case for my smartphone from T-Mobile.

The case looks similar to an Apple bumper cases for the iPhone 4, a simple rubber band encircles the phone with the customary cutouts for access to headphone jack, usb ports etc… The configuration varies to match the smartphone it is designed for.

Lionsgate, a leading global entertainment company, has optioned film rights from Deep Silver to develop a feature inspired by Dead Island, which became a viral media sensation when its haunting, artful trailer launched in February 2011 (see below). D30, science fiction meets reality!

by George Heymann

techeadlines@gmail.com

D30 is an innovative material named for the developer D30 Labs, an impact protection company in the UK. The material has some very desirable qualities, in its normal state, D30 is soft and pliable but on impact the molecules lock together to absorb and disperse energy before almost instantly returning to its flexible state.

The D30 patented technology contains a chemically engineered material called a ‘dilatant’ to function as an energy absorber. The materials rigidity increases in relation with the rate of physical pressure applied. The reactive property of the materials makes it seem alive, this material is truly science fiction come to life.

by Anna Schmidt

Technology Market

A new report by analyst firm Juniper Research forecasts that tablet shipments will reach 253 million by 2016, nearly a five-fold increase from the 55.2 million tablets the company expects to reach the market in 2011.

With a second generation of Apple’s iPad hitting the market earlier this year, other smartphone vendors have followed suit: HTC, LG, Motorola and RIM launched first generation models in 2011. As other opportunities elsewhere in the PC market diminish, leading players from this space – including Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Toshiba – are also joining the fray.

Android selected by 56 percent of new U.S. smartphone owners in the past 3 months according to Nielsen report.

More than half (56%) of new U.S. smartphone owners the past 3 months picked up an Android device according to Nielsen’s most recent survey. The preferences of “recent acquirers” is important because they are often a leading indicator of where the market is going.

Overall Android grew to 43 percent of all US smartphone subscribers followed by Apple iOS who remained steady at 28 percent overall. It will be interesting to see how these figures are affected by the launch of the new iPhone 4S/5 next month. As well as the expected introduction of the iPhone to the Sprint network.

The holiday season should prove to be very interesting indeed.
