Google  came one step closer to the ‘Sci-Fi’ fantasy of creating a universal translator with its most recent update to Google Translate for Android.  The latest version of the software V2.2 has been updated to translate between 14 different languages.

Earlier this year Google introduced an experimental feature called conversation mode, which enabled you to translate speech back and forth between English and Spanish. This was expanded this week to include Brazilian Portuguese, Czech, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Polish, Russian and Turkish.

You can optionally select ‘Enter Conversation Mode’ and you will receive both a written and spoken translation of what is said. In conversation mode the translations work in both directions enabling you to have a conversation with someone in a language that you don’t natively understand.
