Social virtual goods revenues generated via mobile devices to reach $3b in 2011 rising to $4.6 billion in 2016

A new report from Juniper Research finds that soaring usage of social gaming – driven largely by the sharp rise in smartphone adoption – will push the global market for virtual goods bought from mobile social media services from $3 billion this year to $4.6 billion by 2016.

The report found that sales of virtual goods via mobile social media services are flourishing in Japan and China; as social gaming familiarizes consumers with virtual goods, this trend will quickly become global. Increasing tablet usage is also expected to provide further momentum as these devices offer a significantly better user experience for social gaming than smartphones.

Electronic newspaper sales to tablets, eReaders and smartphones to hit $1.1 billion by 2016

A new report from Juniper Research has found that annual revenues derived from eNewspapers delivered to portable devices will exceed $1.1 billion by 2016 with publishers increasingly delivering via subscription-based applications to counteract falling print sales.

The report noted the surge in iPad adoption led a number of newspaper publishers to move beyond standalone smartphone apps towards integrated digital strategies. Companies such as News International have begun offering a single subscription price enabling access to The Times across all digital platforms.

Microsoft completes purchase of Skype

Microsoft has closed its acquisition of Skype Global. Negotiations of the definitive agreement under which Microsoft would acquire Skype, an Internet communications company, for $8.5 billion were led by investor group Silver Lake and the transaction was originally announced on May 10, 2011. Boards of directors of both Microsoft and Skype previously approved the acquisition.

Microsoft and Skype will remain focused on their shared goal of connecting all people across all devices and accelerating both companies’ efforts to transform real-time communications for consumers and enterprise customers. The completion of the acquisition also marks the official introduction of Skype as a new business division within Microsoft.

Tablet shipments to reach 253m by 2016 as new vendors converge on sector, says Juniper Research

A new report by analyst firm Juniper Research forecasts that tablet shipments will reach 253 million by 2016, nearly a five-fold increase from the 55.2 million tablets the company expects to reach the market in 2011.

With a second generation of Apple’s iPad hitting the market earlier this year, other smartphone vendors have followed suit: HTC, LG, Motorola and RIM launched first generation models in 2011. As other opportunities elsewhere in the PC market diminish, leading players from this space – including Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Toshiba – are also joining the fray.

The prospects of mobile video calling have improved in the last eighteen months due to the launch of mobile video calling services by major industry players, increased availability of front-facing cameras on smartphones and underlying technology improvements finds a recently released study by Juniper Research.

mVoIP to Herald New Business Models

The increasing dominance of the smartphone in developed markets, meanwhile, and the simplicity of the app download model have improved the market for mVoIP delivered through mobile clients downloaded to the handset, although there are still few alliances between MNOs and mVoIP service providers, finds Juniper Research.

Survey says: Consumers getting bored with social media

There are signs of maturity in the social media market, as some users in certain segments are showing “social media fatigue”, according to a survey by Gartner, Inc. The survey reveals continued localization of usage, whereby certain country-specific social characteristics dictate preferences. However, large global brands such as Facebook are making headway in countries where they have not historically been strong.

Gartner surveyed 6,295 respondents, between the ages of 13 and 74, in 11 developed and developing markets in December 2010 and January 2011. Consumers were asked about their use of and opinions about social media sites with the aim of examining usage trends and how enthusiastic users were about social media in general across a range of countries.

Feature phone apps market to almost double to $1 billion

The mobile apps market for feature phones will almost double by 2016, hitting revenues of $1 billion, after being spurred on by the success of apps in the smartphone sector, according to Ovum.

In a new report, the independent telecoms analyst claims that while the feature phone apps market has not taken off in the same way as its smartphone counterpart,  it is beginning to take strides forward.

Kaspersky says phishing attacks on Facebook and Habbo are intensifying

Kaspersky Lab has presented its spam report for June 2011 and immediately captured headlines with its claim that phishing attacks on popular social networks Facebook and Habbo are intensifying.

“The amount of phishing emails remained unchanged and accounted for 0.02% of all mail traffic,” says Kaspersky in its report. “However, there was a considerable increase in the amount of phishing attacks on social networks Habbo and Facebook, increasing by 6.25 and 4.07 percentage points respectively, pushing the sites up to third and fourth places in the list of organizations attacked most. The experts at Kaspersky Lab also predict a surge in spam linked to Google+ after recent signs that spammers have begun exploiting the growing interest in the new social network.”

Google Android market ‘more challenging’ than Apple App Store, says Distimo

The Apple App Store is significantly outperforming the Google Android market, according to Distimo, the European company which researches the global app store market.

In its new publication, In-depth view on download volumes in the Google Android Market, Distimo says it found only five paid-for games on Android with more than 250,000 downloads worldwide.
