Google: Tap, pay and save, soon your wallet is your phone

Google, in conjunction with launch partners Citigroup, MasterCard, First Data and Sprint, officially announced its mobile payment app, Google Wallet. The app will essentially make your phone your wallet. The software works in tandem with special hardware utilizing near field communications (NFC).

Amazon reportedly jumping into the NFC mobile payment fray!

Amazon is reportedly working on a Near Field Communication (NFC) payment system that will incorporate their Internet retailing expertise into mobile commerce according to a recent Bloomberg report.

The proposed NFC system would let consumers pay for goods in brick-and-mortar store using their mobile phones.

The NFC system is a short-range wireless technology that is very similar to the embedded card technology that is used today to waive credit cards in front of a reader instead of using a traditional swipe method.

This would put Amazon into direct competition with Google, Apple, Paypal, Citigroup, Inc., MasterCard, Inc. Discover and Isis in the burgeoning NFC mobile payment space.

According to a recent WSJ report, Google, Inc. is partnering with Citigroup, Inc. and Mastercard, Inc. to implement a mobile payment system incorporating Near Field Communications (NFC) technology.
