Nearly half of U.S. Mobile subscribers now own a smartphone, 48 percent are on Android

According to the most recent Nielson report, 49.7 percent of U.S. Mobile subscribers now own a smartphone, an increase of 38 percent over last year. The trend is continuing to grow as more than two-thirds of those who acquired a new mobile device in the last three months chose a smartphone over a feature phone.

In the U.S. Android continues to lead the way with a 48 percent market share, Apple has a 32 percent share, Rim follows with 12 percent, with everyone else making up the remaining 8 percent. If you would like to get additional information check the  full Nielsen report.

Feature phone apps market to almost double to $1 billion

The mobile apps market for feature phones will almost double by 2016, hitting revenues of $1 billion, after being spurred on by the success of apps in the smartphone sector, according to Ovum.

In a new report, the independent telecoms analyst claims that while the feature phone apps market has not taken off in the same way as its smartphone counterpart,  it is beginning to take strides forward.

Smartphone shipments to reach 1 billion annually by 2016

Economy Smartphones, with a retail price of $150 or lower, will account for nearly one-third of shipments in five years, says Juniper.

A new report published by analyst firm Juniper Research forecasts that the number of global smartphone shipments will reach 1 billion per annum in 2016, up from 302 million in 2010.
