Computer learns language by playing games

Computers are great at treating words as data: Word-processing programs let you rearrange and format text however you like, and search engines can quickly find a word anywhere on the Web. But what would it mean for a computer to actually understand the meaning of a sentence written in ordinary English — or French, or Urdu, or Mandarin?

One test might be whether the computer could analyze and follow a set of instructions for an unfamiliar task. And indeed, in the last few years, researchers at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab have begun designing machine-learning systems that do exactly that, with surprisingly good results.

Video game play increases as breadth of game content grows

As much as 72 percent of American households play video games and 82 percent of gamers are adults according to new research released by the Entertainment Software Association (ESA). In a report released at E3, the world’s leading video game event, the data presented a consumer base that is increasingly diverse and receiving interactive game content on myriad platforms.

Perfect World acquires Cryptic Studios from Atari

Perfect World, a leading online game developer and operator based in China, and Atari, announced that they have entered into an agreement whereby Perfect World would acquire 100% equity interest in Cryptic Studios, a California-based online game developer from Atari, the sole shareholder of Cryptic Studios. Under the stock purchase agreement, Perfect World will pay an aggregate purchase price of approximately €35.0  million (approx. 51 million USD)  in cash, subject to working capital and other adjustments as provided in the agreement. The completion of the transactions contemplated in the agreement is subject to satisfaction of closing conditions.

Gameloft responds to Android Army cries regarding user unfriendly Android DRM policy.

A few weeks ago, I shared a post “Gamelofts very user unfriendly Android Game Policy.” In the post, I detailed Gameloft Policy regarding software downloaded from its web store.

“If you buy a game, you can re-download it to the same phone with the same phone number within 3 years of your purchase. If the phone model or number was changed by the customer’s own initiative, Gameloft has the right to refuse re-sending the game.” (Updated 05/20/11 with official Gameloft Response)

Should simulated violence in video games be a cause for concern?

This debate has been ongoing since the dawn of video games, with several study results in direct contradiction of one another’s findings.

Personally, being a consumer of various video games — some of which are violent —  I believe this issue is a symptom of our societal tendency to shirk personal responsibility in favor of blaming media for anti-social behavior.

The official Android redbox app is now available in the Android Market. The redbox app lets you browse and reserve movies, plus find the nearest redbox kiosk with maps from wherever you are. You can see what movies are available, including specific movies at selected kiosks. That way, you will know what is available where at any given time.
