Blue + Magenta = Green; AT&T to buy T-Mobile USA for 39 Billion

by George Heymann

techeadlines@gmail.com

AT&T buys T-Mobile USA for a reported $39 billion. If approved by government regulators, the deal would make AT&T the largest U.S. carrier.

In hindsight, the acquisition makes a lot of sense for AT&T as AT&T and T-Mobile both use complimentary GSM technology and are building out their HSPA+ networks. In addition, AT&T is planning to use T-Mobile’s existing 1700 MHZ spectrum to supplement its ongoing 4G LTE build out.

After T-Mobile quelled speculation of a rumored Sprint Merger, the company inked a deal with AT&T for $25 billion in cash and $14 billion in stock, giving T-Mobile’s parent company Deutsche Telekom an approximately 8 percent stake in AT&T. The transaction is expected to close within 12 months.
