KickSat is a Kickstarter project developed by Zachary Manchester, a graduate student in Aerospace Engineering at Cornell University. The project involves launching mini-spacecraft about the size of of a couple of postage stamps called ‘Sprites’ into space.
The initial micro-sized Sprites consist of a circuit board, containing solar cells, a radio transceiver, and a micro controller with memory and sensors. The initial version of Sprites are not capable of doing much more than transmitting a few bits of data. The plan with the inaugural launch is to gather data on how long Sprites stay in orbit and how well their electronics hold up in the space environment.
