SPB Software is acquired by Russian internet company Yandex.

I received an email today from SPB Software that I wanted to share with you. The letter and press release details the acquisition of SPB Software by Yandex a Russian internet company. SPB also announced that one of its key mobile software applications SPB Shell 3D ( see our review here) would be enhanced to integrate Yandex’s cloud service technology.

“Mobile is a vital part of our growth strategy. The acquisition of SPB Software creates new market potential for us and a plethora of possibilities for innovative solutions for our partners”, said Yandex’s CEO Arkady Volozh. “SPB Shell 3D is an ideal foundation on which to build up our mobile opportunity.”

“SPB Software is excited to join Yandex”, said Sebastian-Justus Schmidt, CEO of SPB Software. “This allows us to unite efforts in developing and marketing new cutting-edge mobile solutions. SPB Software will continue its mission to produce innovative mobile products of the highest quality.”

US mobile map audience grows 39 percent in past year as fixed-internet map audience softens slightly

comScore, a leader in measuring the digital world, has released results of a US study of mobile map usage based on data from its comScore MobiLens service.

The study found that 48 million mobile users accessed maps on their mobile device during the three month average period ending May 2011, an increase of 39 percent from the previous year, driven in large part by the increase in smartphone adoption.

The study found that map usage via mobile applications was the primary access point for smartphone owners as the map app audience doubled in size over the past year.

YouTube 2.1 app now available for Android 2.2 handsets
