Does Google want Motorola only for its patents, or is there something else?

Google‘s decision to buy Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion is seen by many as the search giant’s attempt to get its hands on thousands of valuable patents. But is there another reason?

Motorola Mobility currently holds some 17,000 patents and has another 7,500 pending – all of which will be Google‘s to play with once the deal goes through.

However, Google‘s decision could also be a sign that Internet company is determined to establish itself in the smartphone market.

Is the PC era finished already?

Nobody needed to say it but PCs were always destined to be superseded by newer, faster, better and – hopefully – cheaper devices. We all knew that, but didn’t think about it. It’s the nature of technology – everything changes, all the time.

But when Mark Dean, Chief Technology Officer of IBM Middle East and Africa, wrote a blog heralding “the post-PC era“, the idea that the PC was on the way out went from the back of everyone’s mind straight to the front.

Google to Acquire Motorola Mobility for 12.5 billion

Google and Motorola this morning announced that they have entered into an agreement in which Google will acquire Motorola for 12.5 billion subject to regulatory approval.

Google spin on the acquisition is that it was a natural fit for the two companies and that Google remains committed to Android as an open platform and to its many hardware partners .

Larry Page, CEO of Google, said, “Motorola Mobility’s total commitment to Android has created a natural fit for our two companies. Together, we will create amazing user experiences that supercharge the entire Android ecosystem for the benefit of consumers, partners and developers. I look forward to welcoming Motorolans to our family of Googlers.”

indicated that the performance was substandard, future handsets featuring quad-core processors slated for the fourth quarter should provide a good experience. With the advent of these powerful handsets, Web-top apps, desktop, laptop and perhaps even tablet docks, I believe we are rapidly approaching the time in which phones may become the preliminary method of accessing the Web for a large number of people.
