According to the most recent Nielson report, 49.7 percent of U.S. Mobile subscribers now own a smartphone, an increase of 38 percent over last year. The trend is continuing to grow as more than two-thirds of those who acquired a new mobile device in the last three months chose a smartphone over a feature phone.

In the U.S. Android continues to lead the way with a 48 percent market share, Apple has a 32 percent share, Rim follows with 12 percent, with everyone else making up the remaining 8 percent. If you would like to get additional information check the  full Nielsen report.

What are the most popular Android apps? Unsurprisingly the majority are Google properties according to Nielsen report.

Nielsen released a report today that analyzes Android app usage for the past 30 days. Nielsen broke down the usage data gathered from its proprietary software installed on thousands of consumer phones who agreed to be part of Nilsen’s ongoing smartphone research.

Unsurprisingly five out the top six Android applications were Google properties, with Facebook being the notable exception across all three reported age categories. I say unsurprisingly from looking at my own “most frequently used” apps list.

Personally my top five Android apps are:

  1. Google Voice
  2. Gmail
  3. Browser
  4. Google Search
  5. Android Market

Rounding out my most used list is Dropbox, KeePass Droid, PandoraDoggCatcher and Amazon AppStore. What are your most frequently used apps? How do they compare to the Nielsen List?

Nielsen: Android remains most popular smartphone operating system in U.S. at 43% of market

Nielsen’s third quarter survey of mobile users reveals that Android remains the most popular operating system in the United States, with 43 percent of the market.

Other interesting statistics from the report indicate that while feature phones still enjoy a larger penetration and OS share compared to smartphones 57% vs 43%, the adoption rate for smartphones by age group varies from a low of 18% to as high as 62% for the 25-34 year group.

Check the Nielsen report for additional information.

Android selected by 56 percent of new U.S. smartphone owners in the past 3 months according to Nielsen report.

More than half (56%) of new U.S. smartphone owners the past 3 months picked up an Android device according to Nielsen’s most recent survey. The preferences of “recent acquirers” is important because they are often a leading indicator of where the market is going.

Overall Android grew to 43 percent of all US smartphone subscribers followed by Apple iOS who remained steady at 28 percent overall. It will be interesting to see how these figures are affected by the launch of the new iPhone 4S/5 next month. As well as the expected introduction of the iPhone to the Sprint network.

The holiday season should prove to be very interesting indeed.
