Electronics gifts don’t have to be budget-busters

Despite the downturn in the economy, early polling indicates that a majority of consumers — 52 percent — plan to spend the same or more for gifts this holiday season, according to a recent ICM Research report.

Last year, nearly a third of U.S. consumers’ holiday gift-spending budget went to consumer electronics.

I don’t know who the folks are that participated in the ICM poll, but most of my friends and associates have a more conservative budget this holiday season. Keeping in mind that many of us will need to spend less, I wanted to share my picks for hot tech gifts that won’t break the bank or your budget. Happy Holidays!

Shopping choices get easier

Expect to see big crowds out shopping for e-readers or tablet computers this holiday season.

The flurry of product announcements from Apple, Amazon and Barnes & Noble is revving customer interest in devices that already are hot sellers.

I get asked all of the time for recommendations for both e-readers and tablets.

My answer usually begins with at least two additional questions:

What do you want to do with it?

How much money do you want to spend?

Barnes & Noble officially releases $249 Nook tablet, lighter and faster than Nook Color

Barnes & Noble CEO, William Lynch, took the wraps off of the new $249 Nook tablet at this mornings press event in New York.

The announcement confirmed the Nook tablet specs that had been leaked last week. The Nook tablet will feature a dual-core 1.2GHZ processor, as well as a VividView 1024×600 IPS display (better viewing angles). It’s also slightly thinner and lighter than the original Nook Color, a mere .48 inches thin and weighs in at just 14.1 ounces down from 15.8 ounces. The tablet also features 16GB of internal storage and can accept up to a 32GB microSD card. Like it’s predecessor the Nook tablet fully supports Wifi b/g/n for wireless connectivity.
