Google Drive, Great start but room for improvement!

It’s been nearly a week since Google released Google Drive, and it’s off to a great start. Drive is available for Android, Mac and PC with an iOS and Linux client promised soon. The cloud storage drive comes with 5 GB of free storage which is upgradeable to 25GB for $2.49/month, 100GB for $4.99/month or even 1TB for $49.99/month. When you upgrade to a paid account, your Gmail account storage will also expand to 25GB.

I’ve been using Drive to replace Dropbox for many functions and have been satisfied with its initial implementation. I share my gDoc files as well as an assortment of other files between several of my devices.

Google Docs is integrated with Drive and I would like to see a shared Synced Google Music Folder that would replace the Google Music Manager for Up/Downloading music files. A shared Photo folder would also be a welcomed addition.

Dropbox offering additional free storage, for referrals!

Dropbox has been one of our most used Android apps, it was selected as a must have Android app by us in the past.

Dropbox is a cloud based file storage, sharing and syncing service. It allows you to access your files stored within your virtual Dropbox from any other device (PC, Mac, Phone etc…) that has the software installed. Great way to share files across devices and platforms. I use this software daily to share files between various devices without the need to carry flash drives or disks.

Dropbox is now offering to expand your free storage up to 16GB. You can take advantage this offer by inviting your friends to Dropbox! For every friend who joins and installs Dropbox, they’ll give you both 500 MB of bonus space.

If you don’t currently have a Dropbox account  start here, once you sign-up for service you can invite your friends with your personal referral links, email, or by utilizing Facebook and Twitter.

Reminder: Angry Birds Space to launch March 22

Last week Rovio in cooperation with NASA broadcast a video from the International Space Station to announce the latest version of the Angry Birds game, Angry Birds Space.

Angry Birds Space features 60 new levels and will include new characters, new superpowers and new gameplay. Additional levels will be available as free regular updates, as well as in-app purchases. The game will launch simultaneously on iOS, Android, PC and Mac.

Preview: Android Dropbox App 1.3.0.6

I had a chance to preview the upcoming build of Dropbox V1.3.0.6 for Android. The revised version of the Dropbox app not only looks great with a completely revised UI but also adds several new features, bug fixes and stability improvements. If you would like to try out the build for yourself you can grab a copy from the Dropbox mobile apps forum here.

Here is a list from the Dropbox change log:

  • Favorites: quick offline access to files
  • Bulk upload photos and videos
  • Access all file and folder actions with just one tap
  • Improved gallery view

DC Universe Online now free-to-play

Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) has announced that players can now download and play its popular massively multiplayer online (MMO) action game DC Universe Online (DCUO) for free. Starting today, all PC and PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system players can create their own legendary superhero – or villain – and join forces with their favorite DC Comics characters, including Superman, Batman and the Joker to either save – or destroy – the planet.

“We are confident that going free-to-play will expand the action combat experience of DC Universe Online by making the game more accessible to every type of player so they can choose to play the game their way,” said John Smedley, President, Sony Online Entertainment. “With a portfolio that includes three successful free-to-play games – EverQuest II: Extended, Free Realms and Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures – we have extensive knowledge and experience to apply to DCUO and are thrilled to be taking the game free-to-play today.”

SF Planet Mini Display Port to DVI-I Female Adapter for Mac, inexpensive and works well

I recently moved from a desktop to a laptop, as my primary personal computer. A big part of that decision was being able to find a laptop that was a good compromise between power and portability. Once I decided on the Mac platform, I needed a convenient way to be able to use the laptop with a full size monitor, keyboard and mouse for use in my home office.

In order to be able to use the 25” PC display I already had with my laptop I needed to purchase a Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter. Apple will sell you an adapter for $29.00, or you can order a third party adapter for less, considerably less.

Amazon introduces Kindle Textbook Rental program, claims up to 80% savings over list hardcover textbook price

Amazon has introduced a Kindle Textbook rental program which it claims can save up to 80% of the list hardcover textbook price. The price will vary depending on the rental length which a user can set between 30 and 360 days. If you need to rent longer, the rental can be extended in increments as little as 1 day.

The rental program will let you access your annotations and highlights even after the rental expires. The rental can be converted to a purchase if you decide you would like to keep the ebook for future reference.

You can access your Textbook by downloading one of the free Kindle reading apps for your PC, Mac, iPad, iPhone, Android device, Windows Phone 7, Blackberry, or Kindle .

You can search the Amazon Textbooks Store by title, author or ISBN number to see if a particular textbook is available.

Beginning of the end for printed phone directories?

The California Public Utilities Commission (PUC) granted Verizons request yesterday to end the automatic delivery of printed residential white page listings to customers in the state. Verizon intends to provide customers with an online, electronic version of the white pages residential listings.
