Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 sets all-time record for the biggest entertainment launch with more than $400 million in North America and UK sales alone

Shattering its own day-one sales records, Activision Publishing, a wholly owned subsidiary of Activision Blizzard, announced that its highly-anticipated Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has become the biggest entertainment launch ever with an estimated sell-through of more than $400 million and more than 6.5 million units in North America and the United Kingdoalone in the first 24 hours of its release, according to Chart track and retail customer sell-through information.

This marks the third consecutive year that the Call of Duty franchise has set day one launch records across all forms of entertainment, something no other entertainment franchise in any medium has ever accomplished. Last year, in North America and the United Kingdom, Activision’s Call of Duty: Black Ops had estimated day-one sell-through of $360 million and in 2009, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, set day-one records with estimated sell through of $310 million, according to Chart track and retail customer sell-through information.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, 2011’s most anticipated game, available now

After a year of anticipation, after the breakout success of the first-ever Call of Duty XP live fan event, and after pre-order numbers that toppled even those of 2010′s mega-seller Call of Duty: Black Ops, the ultimate shot has at last been fired.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is now available at retail worldwide. Also launched alongside MW3, was the revolutionary new social gaming network Call of Duty Elite, conceived expressly to help Call of Duty’s 30 million devoted fans Play Together Better.

Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 kicked off its worldwide invasion at midnight as gamers crashed launch parties at over 13,000 retailers from Sydney to London to New York City, intent on being among the first to pull the trigger on the title dubbed “the most anticipated video game in history” by GameStop’s Senior Vice President of Merchandising, Bob McKenzie.

DC Universe Online now free-to-play

Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) has announced that players can now download and play its popular massively multiplayer online (MMO) action game DC Universe Online (DCUO) for free. Starting today, all PC and PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system players can create their own legendary superhero – or villain – and join forces with their favorite DC Comics characters, including Superman, Batman and the Joker to either save – or destroy – the planet.

“We are confident that going free-to-play will expand the action combat experience of DC Universe Online by making the game more accessible to every type of player so they can choose to play the game their way,” said John Smedley, President, Sony Online Entertainment. “With a portfolio that includes three successful free-to-play games – EverQuest II: Extended, Free Realms and Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures – we have extensive knowledge and experience to apply to DCUO and are thrilled to be taking the game free-to-play today.”

Battlefield 3 sells 5 million units in first week, becoming fastest-selling game in EA’s history

Electronic Arts has announced that based on internal estimates, Battlefield 3 has sold through 5 million units in the first week globally, making it the fastest-selling game in EA’s history. The outstanding retail performance is driven by critic’s reviews averaging above 85 on console and above 90 on PC.

Word-of-mouth from gamers is also driving sales — Battlefield 3 now has more than 2.5 million “likes” on Facebook.

Following the tradition of all games in this storied franchise; Battlefield 3 includes a superior multi-player experience. Consumers have logged-on in unprecedented numbers to team up and join the battle. Server stability was solid in the first weekend, delivering EA’s highest-ever usage rates.

BioWare announces Mass Effect 3: Galactic War

BioWare, part of Electronic Arts, today announced the arrival of a multiplayer mode in the hit series Mass Effect. Within the gameplay of Mass Effect 3: Galactic War, players will fight for the survival of the galaxy against the Reapers in the single player campaign and a series of games and applications Mass Effect.

Essentially, Earth has been invaded and the galaxy is on the brink of destruction. You, Commander Shepard, have the difficult task of organizing the cons-offensive to retake the Earth.

Progress in various parts of the game will be directly reflected in the main season of the player. Help Commander Shepard to rally all the forces of the galaxy for the final disposal Reapers. Mass Effect Option 3: Galactic War can be activated via the online code included with each copy of Mass Effect 3 or buying the Online Pass separately.

Lionsgate to bring Dead Island to life on the big screen

Lionsgate, a leading global entertainment company, has optioned film rights from Deep Silver to develop a feature inspired by Dead Island, which became a viral media sensation when its haunting, artful trailer launched in February 2011 (see below). The announcement was made today by Lionsgate’s co-COO and Motion Picture Group President Joe Drake.

Dead Island is a global brand first introduced through a teaser trailer that told the story of a family on vacation at a tropical resort who is besieged by zombies.

Told in a stark, non-linear fashion, the wrenching trailer captured worldwide fan attention and unanimous critical praise upon its debut, receiving over one million hits in its first 24 hours online, and nearly 10 million views by two days after its debut.

Steam: Digital cross-platform game distribution system done right!

Steam is a digital distribution, digital rights management (DRM) system developed by Valve Corporation that is both multi-player and cross-platform.

One of the advantages of purchasing games digitally through the Steam Store are that purchases can be played on any computer that has the steam client installed. Software purchases are permanently tied to your Steam account not a specific computer.

I don’t know how many times, I’ve lost or damaged game disks or misplaced licensing documentation for games that I had previously purchased. With Steam those potential problems are no longer an issue. Just download and install the Steam Client, enter your account credentials and you have full access to your library of purchased games.
